Kenny Loggins is Kurt Cobain

4/17/2004 2:12am

Tonight I dug out a stray VHS copy of "Kenny Loggins Live in the Redwoods" or some such nonsense title. I don't know why I own this, but I suspect my roomate Jerrie had something to do with it.

Anyway, this thing was taped and released in '94 so as a joke Jen, Amy, Christian and I decided to watch it. Kenny was playing on a big-ol' stage out in the woods with lots of hippie moms and dads with their babies in the audience swaying with excitement. What struck us as odd is how grungy Mr. Loggins was looking. I mean, he has on the unbuttoned flannel shirt with the long sleeve shirt underneath, mildly dirty looking (but probably clean) jeans, but most interesting of all, he's sporting a Kurt Cobain blond hair mop on top of his noggin. What's that all about? Kurt Cobain Loggins doing a hippie version of Footloose with 20 drummers, an accordion, a special-needs-harmonica-mandolin-bowser-from-sha-na-na-voice-forgot-the-80's-are-over dude, funny face making guitar player, church choir, what the hell?

I had to put down my can of Whippits 'cause I don't need that crap any more. I've got Hippie Kenny Loggins Cobain.

Okay, here I looked it up. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0168024/

What garbage day means to me

5/2/2004 9:49pm

Garbage day. I own a home. Probably the first hint that I had arrived as an average Joe was when we spent too much money (credit) on a refrigerator. Not an ordinary one, but one of those brushed metal faced ones with an ice/water dispenser on the front. There was a time when flapping my tongue at the bubbly tap water from the kitchen sink with days old dirty dishes next to my ear was good enough for me. Now I push a button, a light fades in and water comes out. Then the light softly fades away as if to avoid upsetting me. (The fade kicks ass, by the way)

So back to garbage day. I took the garbage out tonight because it was full and it's been hot around here this weekend so it was beginning to stink. As I walked out to the garbage can with my bag o' waste carefully pulled tight and knotted, I thought about how happy it makes me when I am able to empty the house of garbage before the truck swings by to haul off our refuse. It's a good feeling, really. Why? It's Sunday and the truck comes on Wednesday. Somehow I manage to think ahead now. Something as simple as remembering garbage day is kind of a big thing for me. I hate dates. I hate times. The thought of having to be somewhere when the big hand strikes anything bugs me. But garbage day is comforting. I'm a big boy now.

Okay, I'll admit it. I've added an Outlook calendar item on my work computer to remind me to take the cans out to the curb on Tuesday nights when I get home. Otherwise I'd probably forget. Or, would I?

Happy Girls

How about that, another music demo. This one's about bad sex. The other one's about happy sex. I'm deep, no?

Time to transfer VHS tapes to DVD. I'm a geek - but enjoy this small video clip from way back when I was "cool" (dork). It's at Cafe Paradiso in Eugene where I worked a lifetime ago.

Aw, what the heck. More demo songs.

6/1/2005 12:00am

I dug up some drum and guitar tracks that were recorded with an old band that evolved into our current band Poncherello, and decided to throw on some vocals.  These were part of a set of about 12 songs which we abandoned then started over with new ones.  Remember it's Christian's guitar, Ken's drums and my scratch vocals only. Someday we may finish them.

The Albany Project is underway

9/8/2005 1:29am

The first demo for The Albany Project concept album is underway.  It's going to be the last song on the CD and I'm shooting to make this particular one an excruciatingly long 30 minutes - here's a demo of the first 2 mins.  It'll eventually have long wankin' guitar solos, a "we are the world" style choir and some serious vocal testifying.

Industrial Music?

4/4/2006 12:27am

I love posting to a blog that no one reads - it's safe that way.

But just in case someone cares, check out an early video of my first band, Squish.  I was attempting to move us away from sounding like Primus and more in the NIN direction.  I failed :)  Not sure when this was recorded, but it was probably 1992.

More old concert footage

8/13/2006 1:37am

This was Pop Secret in Corvallis at the Beatles Fest a very long time ago.  Me, Bob, Ken and Neil.  Neil was sick that day and his voice was a bit shot but he pulled through, Ken was extra tired, I don't think Bob was that into it and I was nervous because I'd never sang live in front of a crowd before.  Those were simpler times :)

Robot experiment

9/23/2006 11:39am

Oliver (my 6-year-old son) and I had some time to kill on Friday, and I wanted to try out using Native Instruments Vokator as a plugin in Abelton Live so we recorded a quick semi-version of Kraftwerk's "We are the Robots".  Oliver loves the song, especially the video, and knows it well so he played the role of producer.  I was programming the song from memory and he helped let me know when something should be "lower" or "higher" or "didn't sound right" as he probably knows the song better than I do at this point.

Lyrics are mixed up and I added a verse using Oliver's name at the end.  We laughed and had a good time.  Being a daddy rocks.

Click the play button below and listen... if you dare!

UPDATE: I just realized that the link to my mp3 didn't work on Windows Explorer/XP so it's been changed to a standard link.  Plus, a couple of weeks ago I added more to the song to help Oliver spell that unfortunate, long hyphenated last name we gave him.  It totally worked - he was spelling his last name within 24 hours and he still listens to this song every night when he goes to bed.

Karaoke Halloween party video.

That's right, people. The entire karaoke party was taped, and a few of you were there so check it out. Drunk people in costume singing their lungs out? Don't miss it!

X number 1

1/9/2007 11:57pm

Oliver and I worked on a new song, and again I played the role of producer while he was the true artist.  I even got him to do some vocals... finally!

For a while now he's had this idea to do a song about "X Number 1."  It's such a cool phrase that I thought we should really try to make something of it.  Now I present to you the fruits of our 30 minute labor, complete with cheezy keyboards, silly effects and drumsticks hitting an empty computer case.  Enjoy.

See us get married.

1/26/2007 4:00pm

I've been meaning to transfer this from an old VHS tape for some time now.

We got married in Vegas on December 12-13, 1995.  The reason I say it's two days is because it started just before midnight and ended right after midnight when we kissed.  Since the chapel closed at midnight you can tell that they were in a hurry to get us out of there.

Another demo

2/12/2007 1:50am

In the morning I may regret posting this and delete it. But in case someone should happen to listen, my usual excuses apply - it's a demo, the vocals are ad-lib and out of tune but I'm liking where it's going for sure.

Waste of Time (mp3, 4.8 meg)

I'm thinking this should be an extra track on the Echo No Echo album (in progress).

I was f*ck*ng banned by YouTube! LOL

What?  The first video that I ever posted to YouTube well over a year ago was banned today.  I received the following email:

--------------------

Bastards!  To tell the truth, I don't have my panties in a bunch because it was removed, but I find it really funny that they chose it. So now it's time to tell the whole story.  Here it is.

Liz and I worked together in adjoining cubes and she was expecting her second child and was leaving the company.  As I often do, I came up with a stupid idea and decided to send an email tribute in the form of rewritten lyrics to the first verse of an 80s song, "Nothing compares 2 Liz."  It went over well and I was inspired to record the entire song with my own lyrics.  I posted this to my web site and shared it with Liz and another coworker.  We all had a good laugh.

But, lurking in the shadows was Pete.  He must have been poking around in the mp3 directory on my website where I posted this song, found it and got the idea to actually make a video to go with it.  I had no idea!  One day he sprung it on me and I died laughing while I watched it.  It was one of those moments at work where you're supposed to be quietly going about your day, you see something hilarious and burst out laughing then quickly stifle it only to confuse those around you.

Anyway, I posted that to YouTube - a spoof of "Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinead O'Connor (Prince) with a karaoke backing track and a silly Monty Python style video compliments of Pete.  Why would they ban this?  Seriously?  Do a search on YouTube for "nothing compares" and you'll find many posts of the actual unedited video as well as people doing their own renditions of the song.  I suppose it's because Pete used very brief clips from the real video interspersed with my bizarre head shot, weak vocals, donuts and t-code-j imagery.  Wow.  Good job Universal Music Publishing Group.  You totally shut down my operation.

Now without further adieu, I present to you the video.  It's definitely one of those "had to be there" moments and full of inside jokes, but you might find parts of it funny.

(video no longer available on MySpace)

Here are the lyrics:

it's been lots of hours and many days
since you sat here in your cube

i come to campus every morning
and work on biz
but i never see you here

since you've been gone
i can code whatever i want
if-then's on every page

i can slap an image together in photoshop
but no one i said no one
can design a better image for biz

'cause nothing compares
nothing compares 2 liz

it's been so boring without you here
like a page without a
nothing stop my ATG from crashing
tell me lizzie, where did the install go wrong?

i could wrap my code around every picture i see
but they'd only remind me of you
i went to jodi and guess what she told me
guess what she told me?

she said, "trent you better keep on working
it ain't harder here without having liz!"
but we know it is

'cause nothing compares
nothing compares 2 liz

all the pages you designed mamma
for nikebiz
stayed there when you went away

i know that designing with us lizzie was sometimes hard
but we're wishing you'd give it
another try

'cause nothing compares
nothing compares 2 liz
nothing compares
nothing compares 2 liz
nothing compares
nothing compares 2 liz

Video time

5/18/2007 1:04pm

For ages I've been meaning to transfer assorted VHS footage from bands that I've been involved with over the years.  For the Coos Bay City Rollers, Pete provided some great stuff that I didn't have and over the last few days I've working on it.  This one's cool because there happened to be two cameras taping the show so I'm able to do some simple transitions to make it more interesting.

This is a quick clip for fun.  The final will be a DVD version of the entire show.  This is at Thee O in Portland, April 19, 1997.  Sheesh, ten years ago! FYI: I played this show too, but was tucked way back in a dark corner on keys.

X Number 1 - Rock 'n' roll version

6/25/2007 10:03am

Okay, I know this is one of those proud parent moments where everything my boy does is amazing but to the rest of the world it appears as a "yeah, that's cute but um, ok" moments.  Kind of like watching a 20 minute video of a baby's first bath - awesome for the parents but a little long for the rest of the population.

Anyway, this is totally rad and everything my boy does is amazing.  Oliver has been playing Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 on our old eMac and in this game one of the songs that plays in the background is TNT by AC/DC.  He discovered that he LOVES this song and that AC/DC rocks!  I even burned a best-of CD for him to listen to as he goes to bed at night.  It's in constant rotation.

Meanwhile, I've been encouraging him to play the drums since every time he's had the opportunity to sit behind a kit he has a great time, but eventually he gets self-conscious and frustrated when he can't play perfectly.  He doesn't fully understand that people get good at these things after lots and lots of practice, so I'm trying to help him through that process.  I sat down with him and showed him how to do "1-2-1-2" which is essentially the most basic kick/snare beat.  He's gotten pretty good at that and really enjoys it so... long story short, he wanted to play TNT by AC/DC so I immediately grabbed my guitar and plugged it in.  His eyes opened so wide when he heard his drums with the guitar and realized that this is how rock is born!  Unfortunately I didn't record that first session.

Last night he asked to do "1-2-1-2" again, so I plugged in some mics, pulled out the guitar and started rockin'.  We did TNT of course, but he wanted me to put a mic in front of him so he could play drums and sing X#1 at the same time (refer to my previous X#1 post).  I'm not one to pass up an opportunity like that, so I hooked him up but kind of expected him to get shy and change his mind.  Luckily, that didn't happen.

So here's a portion of that recording.  Enjoy Oliver's first simultaneous drum+vocal Phil Collins moment.

New song (take 2)

7/15/2007 4:08pm

I posted an early version of this a few weeks ago after staying up 'til 4 a.m. working on it one evening, but removed it hours later once I realized it was crap.

So, I spent some more time on it and I even like it.  For now...  anyway I'm moving on to happier subjects after this.

Push the Blood Back

I give up. Time to throw in the towel.

8/9/2007 2:37pm

My job has become unbearable.  The 45 minute commute each way, the drudgery of making minute copy changes to web pages over and over.  Just about all opportunities to do any kind of challenging or even mildly stimulating design work have dried up.  Not to sound pompous, but I'm so much more than a button pushing web monkey.

If you or your employer are looking for a talented web designer/developer let me know. PHP, Java/JSP, MySQL, XHTML, CSS, Flash, PhotoShop, Illustrator and so much more - my talents are soon to be available to the masses!

It's time to get the portfolio up to par (last updated in 2000!) polish the resume a bit and hit the pavement.  The plan is to start looking for work on the East side of the river closer to home (good-bye Beaverton/Hillsboro - I hope never to visit again unless I need to buy a car) and ease my way into the Pearl district if needed.  I'll be looking at local design agencies that the giant company that is my current employer (hint: swoosh) contracts with to do the work that I once had a small taste of.  I'm on the wrong side of the fence!

Had to vent a little.  Good times are ahead, and it's time to get the rear in gear.  Though, I'm a bit nervous about the whole thing.  It's been 7 years since I've looked for work and getting back into interviewing will be an adjustment but the time for change is NOW!

A small dose of karaoke poison

11/6/2007 11:50pm

The Halloween karaoke party web site is about to launch.  Here's a sample of my awesomeness.

This week is the beginning of something new

11/12/2007 4:17pm

So, I posted my "I can't stand it anymore" job rant back in August in the heat of a frustrating work day in an effort to force myself to commit to making a change.  Since then I've had some ups and downs in time and motivation, but I've been working on my online portfolio and resume whenever I could.

I'm happy to say that I'm ready to go! This week I'll begin sending emails and filling out forms in search of that perfect job - starting tonight.  Wish me luck!

My portfolio and resume

It’s official. I have a new job!

11/30/2007 2:16pm

Just hours ago I signed on the line, and Monday I'll be giving my two week notice at Nike.

Starting December 17 I'll be working as a contractor, but the pay is good and the company I'm moving to is fantastic.  The place is Concrete and it is such a good fit!  I'll be working downtown and it sounds like a laid back atmosphere where people work hard, get shit done and enjoy what they're doing.  Best of all - I'm throwing off the corporate chains and stepping back into the real world.

This all happened amazingly fast.  I had applied for a few jobs directly on Friday, Nov. 16 but the real excitment happened when I made my resume public on Monster.com.  I got so many calls on Monday that I had to make it private again that evening.  That's where the Concrete lead came from and I'm so glad!  I initially wasn't going to look for contract gigs, but this was a perfect opportunity that I couldn't pass up.  It's a contract to hire position so I'm hopeful that I'll get in there, do some killer work and get hired.  I'm so looking forward to this move you don't even know.  Plus, now I'll get to hone my skills and work on a variety of projects that are actually visible to the rest of the world.  The majority of what I've been doing up until now is all internal to the company and is never seen by eyes outside of Nike.

Thanks to everyone who offered support and encouragement.  I'm so excited to be making such a huge change - it was a long time coming.

If a tree falls in my front yard, can anyone hear me swear about it?

12/4/2007 11:34am

Last night at around 4pm I got a call at work from Jen and she told me that the big tree in our front yard fell down and was hanging over the sidewalk!  I was home by 5 with chainsaw in hand.  Here are a few pictures of the event. We hated that tree anyway, so it's falling spared us from having to pay for removal.

We're on a corner and luckily it fell on the diagonal, otherwise it could have taken out powerlines, blocked a busy street or landed on our house.  Technically it did fall on a house, but it was Oliver's plastic play house that we use as a bicycle garage.  I had put his Razor three wheeler on top and the tree was caught by its pedals and was holding it up.  This kept it from blocking the sidewalk and taking out a chunk of our hedges.  Oliver's toys saved the day!  He was disappointed that they were damaged, but proud that his toys are heroes.

Hot new webcam action!

12/19/2007 1:55am

This is sure to be the next internet sensation.  Remember the Trojan Room Coffee Pot Webcam?  I do.  What about The Netscape Sign?  I remember that too.  All old-school, groundbreaking webcams.  That was the internet moments before porn took over the webcam market. Geeks with technology.

Thanks to a thoughtful coworker I bring you my own webcam.  It's pointed directly at me when I sit at my desk at home staring at the computer screen, but since I'm generally away from home from 8am to 6pm it'll be nothing but a picture of my chair, or if you're lucky it'll be complete darkness because the lights are off.

Oh, but tune in after 11pm until the wee hours of the morning and you're sure to see me staring blankly, tilting back a beer or picking my nose.  Who knows what crazy things I might do!  If it gets too out of control I'll turn the webcam off ... if I remember.

Echo No Echo on live television

1/21/2008 11:25pm

Hello friends.

Echo No Echo, the reclusive band that rarely pokes its head out from obscurity, is venturing out one more time for a live television event. We'll be playing all of the songs that you remember from the 2006 Crystal Ballroom show  along with three new originals.

If you're a fan of  Moog infused synth-pop, scalding hot rock'n'roll, infectious  dance grooves and soothing synth-laden melodies then you won't want to miss this show.  Better yet, come to the Ethos Music Center and watch the broadcast live and in person while the performance is transmitted electronically over the cable network through the magic of public access television.  The show is 100% free so you have nothing to lose. All ages are welcome and there's plenty of room for everyone in the studio.

Watch us from home:

Echo No Echo on the Ethos Live television show
  Friday, February 1 from 8 - 9 p.m.
Comcast public access channel 23

Or better yet, come and watch us perform live in studio:

Ethos Music Center
10 N. Killingsworth Street

This is live television and the show starts promptly at 8 p.m. so be there on time. Ethos Music Center has a cafe in front so come early, grab a latte and hang out for awhile.

Here’s a little Lego stop motion video that Oliver and I put together today.

My Plymouth Neon commercial

4/12/2008 10:53pm

Waaaaay back in the mid 90s in my second meager attempt at college I took an electronic music class at Lane Community College in Eugene, OR. It was pretty cool that the class was even offered so I went for it. This particular assignment was to take the video from a current commercial with the sound removed and write and record a new soundtrack.

I'm certain that many more Neons would have been sold if they'd only used MY version.

W+K - A new job.

6/4/2008 6:47pm

Being somewhat superstitious I didn't want to post anything about this until after my first day on the job.  Today was that day and I'm delighted to say that I've made one more career change and now work at Wieden+Kennedy! I'll be working on a variety of projects, mostly Flash and some PHP and whatever else they want to throw at me.  I'm pretty stoked. It's a contract gig and I'd love to turn it into a full-time position so I'm prepared to do some seriously awesome work to make that happen.

149,887 / 250,000

7/23/2008 6:41pm

I snuck out briefly during work today to pick up the new NIN CD that was released earlier this week, though I didn't know about it until today. There's a limited edition version with a bonus DVD and stickers and there are only 250,000 available worldwide. I thought for sure I wouldn't get one but when I checked Everyday Music on Burnside they had two! Looking closer I saw that they had at least a dozen, so I proceeded to find the one with the lowest number, knowing all the while that it was totally ridiculous to do this but I couldn't help myself. There's still a shred of obsessive collector in me that rears its ugly head every now and then.

Anyway, I snatched number 149,887 so Portland must be somewhere
just past the middle of the supply chain. I'm ashamed that I even know what supply chain means, but I do...

And of course I had downloaded The Slip when it was released online, but hey this has a DVD that honestly I'll probably only watch one time but I HAVE IT! Muaaa haaa haaaa! Pay attention record industry, this music was given away for free online and I still bought the CD. I might even buy the vinyl too, but that collector in me has calmed down a bit.

Speaking of CDs, if you haven't already, buy the new Echo No Echo CD at echonoecho.com. I have yet to craft a press release of sorts, so it hasn't been officially announced yet, but you can order it today!

Happy? Yes!

8/17/2008 11:23pm

I'm very happy about where I work, though I wished I'd showered and shaved on the day they were taping this.  It was a surprise, so I wasn't prepared.

This one time I was walking home from Squirrels to my apartment on 2nd and Jefferson in Corvallis with Jen and a few other people and we were passing through this parking lot downtown and there was this red low-rider sports car parked there and it was the only car in the lot and I was like, "Hey everybody check it out.  I'm going to run and jump right over this car."  I got all ready to go in a track runner's stance and was about to take a step when a dude and his buddies said "No you're fucking not" and it turns out they had just parked the car and were walking away but had passed the corner around a building and I didn't see them.  So I didn't jump over the car, but I could have because I could really jump high back then.

I found something today

11/15/2008 9:14am

As I was fumbling with my iPod while crossing the street on my lunch break today I happened to notice a tightly folded bill lying on the ground.  A few things ran through my head as I stepped over it.

"Take it because it's free money"
"Remember the time in Squirrels when you picked up that folded $20 bill and it turned out to be a clever advertisement?"
"People will see you pick it up and you'll feel guilty."
"You don't need the money.  Leave it for someone who does need it."
"What if it's $100?"
"If you come back from lunch and it is still there then you were meant to have it."

I ate lunch and now I'm $5 closer to making up for the time that I withdrew $20 from an ATM and forgot to take it before walking away.

Echo No Echo - Live!

11/25/2008 8:55am

That's right friends, you heard correctly. Echo No Echo is playing a live show and you can come watch us sing and play.

This Sunday night at the Ash Street Saloon in Portland starting at 9 p.m. you can catch some exquisite new wave performances from...

Fade 13
The Tar Plains
and us, Echo No Echo

We'll even play some new songs that aren't on our new album, Crystals.  That's worth it for sure!

You'll be totally sick of turkey by then, so come hang with us and the gang and work off the food you've been eating over the holiday by shaking your boo-tay to some catchy new wave tunes.  One of us might even give you a shoulder massage if you ask nicely. Did that sound desperate? Never mind. But we'll do it special for you.

Hard to Figure Out

5/24/2009 12:59am

It's been a while since I've posted a demo song, so here's one. I wrote this one back when I was 18 or so, and recently I decided to revisit the concept and record it again.

Heading to New York City on Sunday

6/5/2009 10:26am

I'm lucky. The Coraline web site won a Webby Award for best use of animation or motion graphics and since I was involved in the development of the site I have been chosen to go with a group of Wieden+Kennedy peeps to the awards ceremony in NYC. It should prove to be very exciting since this is my first trip there and it's looking like it'll be a star studded event. I hope I see Trent Reznor since he won the artist of the year award. Woohoo!

I'll be updating my Facebook profile while I'm there so check that on Monday night for updates.

I pissed with Trent Reznor

6/11/2009 12:02am

That's right. I shared the same restroom with Trent Reznor. I didn't realize this until a minute later when I was washing my hands and happened to look next to me and there he was washing his hands too. Before I could do anything about it some dude came out of nowhere and tried to invite Trent to his friend's birthday party later in the evening. I could tell that Mr. Reznor was not at all pleased please about this but he graciously told the dude to tell his friend he said, "Hi."

This effectively killed any chance that I might have had to congratulate Trent Reznor on winning the Artist of the Year Webby award or to invite him to my friend's birthday party. At least our hands are clean.

Goodbye Blue Ford Focus

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKehCkfEW3E

It's been nearly three weeks after the car accident that so cruelly took the blue Ford Focus away from me - away from all of us. Join me as I say (well, sing) a tender "Goodbye" to the good old blue Ford Focus.

New video - The Promise Breakers - Go Away

12/17/2009 10:57am

The Promise Breakers - another band you've never heard of that I was in a decade ago now. We didn't play live much (I think only once) and I recently looked at footage from our show at my housewarming party on April 29, 2000. It seemed like a good time to make a music video for one of our songs, so here it is. The theme for the party was Polyester which explains some of the outfits you might spot on the crowd (and my shirt.)
